Competition was fierce in this year’s scholarship competition. Students were asked to submit an application, in which they answered various questions about themselves and explained which of the 7 Cooperative Principles they believe is the most important. The board selected a total of 11 high school Seniors, one of which was for a Vocational/Technical scholarship, and 14 college students who were previous recipients of a scholarship at the high school level. Since RGEC began awarding scholarships in 2016, it has provided over $ 243,400 in scholarships to students whose parents/legal guardians are RGEC members.
Scholarships are made possible through the use of unclaimed capital credits. When capital credits remain unclaimed for a certain amount of time, they are forwarded to the State of Texas. If they remain unclaimed there, a portion of the ‘escheated’ funds are returned to the Co-op to be used for scholarships, in accordance with provisions set forth by state law.
