Effective January 1, 2025, the Environmental Protection Agency will require all newly installed AC systems to use a new coolant called R-454B or R-32. Most current systems use R-22 or R-410A, which the EPA says contribute to global warming.
You are not required to retrofit your existing unit, and it can remain in service until it is old and unrepairable. If it needs to be recharged, it should be possible to continue to obtain reclaimed R-22 or R-410A for a period of time. Additionally, new units in inventory which were manufactured for and charged with the coolants being phased out can continue to be sold, for a time, however inventory is expected to be depleted in time for the January 1 deadline. After January 1, the only systems that will be available for purchase will be the new EPA-approved HVAC units, as the pre-regulatory systems are completely phased out. The new EPAapproved HVAC units will begin hitting the market soon, and, as this happens, consumers will likely see a noticeable increase in the unit price of a new air conditioning system.
Licensed HVAC professionals will be up-to-date on the procedures required for handling these new refrigerants, and should be consulted regarding the recharging and/or replacement of existing units.
