Having a generator on hand in case of an extended power outage is a convenient way to maintain access to electricity, but they also pose serious safety risks if not used properly. If hooked up incorrectly, generators can cause dangerous backfeed onto power lines. Not only can this be dangerous for you and your neighbors, but it also poses a threat to our linemen working to restore outages.
For this reason, it’s important for Rio Grande Electric Co-op (RGEC) to be made aware of locations that may use generators in the event of a power outage.
- Before installing a generator, email RGEC or call (800) 749-1509.
- Complete the application and use 1 of the diagrams in the application. Submit the application and diagram by emailing RGEC, delivering it to any area office, or mailing it to:

- Once the application and diagram are submitted, RGEC staff will review the materials.
- Once approved, the member can proceed with installation. A temporary disconnect can be requested by contacting RGEC at (800) 749-1509.
- Upon completion, notify RGEC of the installation and arrange for an inspection by RGEC personnel.
- When installation passes RGEC’s inspection, power will be restored.
