Summer does not officially begin until the 20th of this month, but most people in Co-op Country would argue the point because we have been experiencing some convincing summer-like temperatures for quite a while now. Anything you can do to make your home feel more comfortable without using more energy than necessary is appreciated, and fans are a great tool in the arsenal against summer heat. They provide an energy-efficient and cost-effective way to stay comfortable as the weather heats up. They help circulate air and create a cooling breeze which helps to evaporate sweat from your skin.
Did you know that you may be able to raise the thermostat by about 4 degrees without reducing your comfort level when you’re in a room with a ceiling fan? This is actually due to the effects of wind chill.
To use ceiling fans most efficiently, remember that they should be set to turn counterclockwise in warm months. A small switch located on the base of the fan unit controls the direction. You can check the direction of rotation by standing directly under the fan as you turn it off.
There is no benefit to be gained from leaving a ceiling fan on when you leave the room because fans cool people -- not rooms.
Other types of fans can also contribute to your comfort. Floor or box fans and other types of portable fans can be used for spot cooling. They, too, should be turned off when you leave the room.
Ventilation fans used in bathrooms help remove heat and humidity when showering or bathing.
In the kitchen, vent fans remove excess heat, as well as food odors and humidity.
It’s a good idea to check vent fans to make sure they are completely vented outside, and not to another interior space such as an attic. They should also be checked for debris such as bird or insect nests to ensure a free flow of vented air.
